Connotation

We all do this sometimes mean something completely innocent and yet the words come off a bit wrong.....

Shawn Spencer: Good morning, detectives! Collecting donations for the Policeman's Ball?
Carlton Lassiter: We don't have balls.
Shawn Spencer: I honestly have no response for that.
Carlton Lassiter: Need I remind you, Mr. Spencer, what happens when you interfere with a police investigation?
Shawn Spencer: Uhhh... The case gets solved?

Also isn't it nice when you try to help driven people with something and then they let their pride interfere with everything...
Karen Vick: It goes without saying, Mr. Spencer, that your father is in no way to participate in this investigation. He's no longer on the force, and his meddling could compromise the case in court. Do I make myself clear?
Shawn Spencer: Yes, you do, Chief. What isn't clear is why people always say "goes without saying," yet still feel compelled to say the thing that was supposed to go without saying. Doesn't that bother you?
Karen Vick: No, and frankly, I could care less.
Burton 'Gus' Guster: Now, that's the one that bothers me. Why do people say, 'I could care less' when they really mean, 'I couldn't care less?'
Karen Vick: Well, why don't you tell me how to properly say this? If you share any official information about this case with your father, or let him anywhere near any new evidence, then the two of you will have to find another police department to work for, and I will personally see to it that each of you is charged with obstruction of justice.
Burton 'Gus' Guster: You split an infinitive.
Shawn Spencer: Good catch, Gus!
Karen Vick: You two realize I carry a gun, right?
Burton 'Gus' Guster: That was perfectly elocuted.

Why don't people say what they mean and mean what they say? Couldn't we all do better with a little more honesty? Ahh the trickiness of the English language.... and hilarious!!!

How much DO we think about others?

As Heard on DVD:
Clark: I just want to say I'm sorry.
Chloe: For what?
Clark: Letting you get hurt.
Chloe: Well, I am perturbed with you, Clark. I'm also mad that you didn't put out the Chicago fire of 1871, or prevent the fall of the Roman Empire, making you directly responsible for the Dark Ages.

Lesson #1: Don't blame others for your problems....
This quote is so relevant because sometimes we feel guilty for things that cannot be controlled. Would it be better if I felt guilty about things I could control? Society often feels like it should be able to control everything that we have to do and be everything that we feel like we need to be.Is that the best approach? So that when the time comes no one takes any responsibility. It is necessary to take responsibility for what we wrongfully did. How often had we had conversations that start with "Well what had happened was..."? In order to shift blame from us to no one.

Lesson #2: What are you responsible for?
Clark always feels responsible for the safety of everyone he knows even though there is no way that he can save them all. Chloe and others realize the ridiculousness of this logic even though they feel safer when he worries. Another lesson we can learn from this is how to make light of a situation. Too often we become so serious with our petty problems that we forget that being too wrapped up in our problems makes them worse. Laugh a little. Make others laugh. They would appreciate it more than a somber attitude.
